Our menstrual blood is powerful, potent, and life giving. Our blood deserves nothing short of our absolute devotion and admiration, despite what our current patriarchal society teaches us. By developing an understanding and connection to our menstrual blood, we can learn so much about our bodies. Once we learn the power and potency of our menstrual blood there is no going back!
Our wombs hold so much ancient wisdom that is just waiting to be discovered.
For many of us, we were taught that menstrual blood and the inner workings of our womb are shameful and should be kept hidden, never discussed, let alone explored and observed. As a result of those deep seeded teachings, most of us have been severely disconnected and estranged from our creative center, the womb.
Working through the internalized shame, disgust, and stigma associated with our menstrual blood is the first step to reclaiming our sacred womb connection and deepening our relationship with our entire body. The most powerful and effective way that I’ve found to build this intimate relationship is to begin engaging with your womb and menstrual blood on a regular basis.
Here are 4 ways to connect with your menstrual blood:

1. Collect and Observe
Simply collecting and observing the unique subtleties of your menstrual blood from month to month is the foundational component in learning to accept and connect with your womb. For many of us, we are accustomed to using tampons and pads that absorb our blood fully, so that we never truly get to engage with it in a meaningful way. Using a menstrual cup, period underwear, or catching some blood by free bleeding into a jar can provide ways for us to engage more deeply. Over time, we are able to learn the subtleties of our wombs’ cyclical rhythm, and can increase our womb literacy to be able to decipher the quality, quantity, color, texture, timing, and flow of our menstrual blood. Menstruation is a vital indicator of the overall health of our entire bodies, and it can convey the health of our reproductive organs, hormone imbalances, and even stress level changes; therefore, don’t miss out on the opportunity to engage with it!

2. Create art
Did you know that in many ancient civilizations menstrual blood was the first artistic medium used to paint? Collecting your menstrual blood via cup or free bleeding into a jar is great way to begin your artistic journey. Allowing yourself to create and paint anything that comes to mind using your own blood is a very cathartic process. Having a tactile experience with your menstrual blood also supports a deep understanding of the color, texture, and overal consistency of your blood, which is helpful to establish a baseline indicator of your wombs’ health.

3. Face masks
As unconventional as it seems, using menstrual blood as a natural facial has many benefits. Menstrual blood contains high volumes of stem cells, specifically called Menstrual blood-derived stem cells (MenSCs). Stem cells are well known for their regenerative properties. Using menstrual blood as a face mask allows all the self renewing nutrients, plasma, and antimicrobial properties to heal and penetrate your skin. It’s also a lovely, primal way to connect with your blood while supporting your skin’s health and beauty. Personally, I’ve noticed my skin is it’s most calm, clear, and glowing after a menstrual facial.

4. Meditation
Utilizing menstrual blood as a meditative aid is a beautiful way to honor the powerful creative capabilities that your womb holds. After collecting your blood by your method of choice, you can keep it in a jar on your altar or any other special place you have dedicated to yourself within your home. Menstrual blood can last in the fridge for up to 5-6 days and can last in the freezer for weeks/months. While meditating, you can gently focus your gaze on your menstrual blood or close your eyes and feel it’s potent energy. Meditating with menstrual blood is an opportunity to connect with the abundant, creative, life giving energy that always exists within you.
Establishing a relationship with your womb and blood leads to greater self love, body autonomy, self acceptance, and body literacy. Developing a relationship with your womb and menstrual blood is vital to restoring the collective amnesia about who and what we truly are as women. We have no reason to carry shame. Each of us is a Divine and loved Co-creator. All it takes is for us to reconnect and remember.
With love,
Whitney
